Dr. Bo Young Kang Biography

Bo Young Kang is a choral and orchestral conductor whose work spans universities, community ensembles, and distinguished national training programs. She completed her second master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at Bowling Green State University in May 2026.

Before her orchestral studies, Dr. Kang served as Director of Choral Activities at Bluffton University, leading the Camerata Singers, University Chorale, and Choral Society, and teaching a range of music courses. She also conducted the Black Swamp Community Orchestra during the 2023 spring and fall seasons. As a singer, she performs with the Vocal Arts Ensemble in Cincinnati under the direction of Craig Hella Johnson.

Dr. Kang has directed numerous choral ensembles across Texas, Pennsylvania, and South Korea, including Vox Beata, Collegium Musicum, and the UT Summer Choral Society at the University of Texas; Global Singers, The Twelve, and the Korean Church Music Choir in State College; and many church choirs throughout her career.

She has been selected as a conducting fellow for several prominent programs, including the Miami Music Festival Conducting Institute, the Chicago Conducting Masterclass & Workshop Series, the Norfolk Yale Chamber Music Festival, the Eastman Summer Masterworks Masterclass, and the Chorus America Choral‑Orchestral Masterclass. Her training also includes masterclasses with leading pedagogues such as Mark Gibson, Donald Schleicher, Simon Carrington, Vance George, Jerry Blackstone, William Weinert, Jo‑Michael Scheibe, Julie Skadsem, David Hayes, Jacques Lacombe, Miriam Burns, Mark Shapiro, and Susan Medley. Her primary teachers include Emily Freeman Brown, James Morrow, Lynn Drafall, and Christopher Kiver.

Dr. Kang earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied with Dr. James Morrow. At UT, she served as Director of the University Chorus and as Assistant Director for the Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale, and the Bach Cantata Project. She also taught Graduate Choral Literature and Undergraduate Choral Conducting.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from SookMyung Women’s University in South Korea and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Pennsylvania State University, where she served as Teaching Assistant and Assistant Conductor for the Concert Choir, Oriana Singers, and University Choir.
