Richard built this concert around Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue\, composed 100 years ago\, and we are delighted to welcome Austin pianist Joseph Choi on stage as the soloist.  The rest of the concert is filled out with music by American composers who thrived at the same time as Gershwin and were supportive of each other’s work. The winners of the Butler School of Music’s String Concerto Competition perform concerti accompanied by the orchestra. \nACO Guest Conductor\, Jacob Schnitzer leads our outstanding student artists on works from Schumann and Sibelius. \nThe Orchestra concludes the concert with an innovative presentation of Holst’s The Planets. Local artist Laura Mercado-Wright composed interludes – titled Between the Planets – to fit between the movements of Holst’s composition. VAMP Vocals will perform each interlude as an introduction of the astrological characteristic of the following movement. Throughout the season\, you will hear beloved classics alongside new and eclectic works. \nDuring this concert at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s auditorium\, the orchestra will perform an assortment of large chamber repertoire\, which highlights all the separate sections of the orchestra. The concert includes music by Piazzolla\, Newbold\, Strauss\, Reich\, and Di Lorenzo. \nFull program: \n\nPiazzolla: Libertango \nNewbold: Perseus with guest conductor Richard Frazier \nBalmages: Lyric Metal\nVivaldi: Concerto in A Minor for Bassoon featuring Aurel Garza-Tucker\nStrauss: Serenade Op. 7\nReich: Music For Pieces Of Wood \nDi Lorenzo: A Little Russian Circus\n\nTickets are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors (62 years and older)\, teachers\, college students\, and members of the military/veterans; and free for youth. DESCRIPTION:Join the Austin Civic Orchestra in its February installment of  The Beat Goes On\, a series of virtual events featuring ACO musicians organized into chamber ensembles. \nThe concert will be streamed on our YouTube and Facebook pages on Saturday\, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and available to watch any time afterwards. \nThis hour-long concert features 9 ensembles comprised of Orchestra members and their families. We observed the tighter restrictions in the Austin area for COVID-19 by reducing the size of the ensembles as well as contributing to recording projects remotely.
