Operations Manager — Austin Civic Orchestra

The Austin Civic Orchestra (ACO), founded in 1977, is a nonprofit ensemble dedicated to bringing high‑quality, accessible music to the Greater Austin community. We perform classical masterworks, pops, film scores, and contemporary works in welcoming venues across the city.

Position Overview

The Operations Manager oversees rehearsal and concert logistics for the ACO and plays a key role in ensuring smooth, successful performances. This is a hands‑on role ideal for emerging arts leaders, students, or recent graduates seeking real experience in event production and arts administration.

Location

Work takes place at various rehearsal and concert venues throughout Austin, with some administrative work completed remotely.

Hours

  • Contract position
  • $25-$30 an hour
  • Weekly hours vary by concert cycle:
    • 1–2 hours during non‑concert weeks 
    • Up to 15 hours during concert weeks
  • Start date: December 1, 2026, with training alongside the current Operations Manager

Responsibilities

Concert & Rehearsal Operations

  • Arrange and manage rehearsal venues for dress rehearsals and concerts
  • Negotiate and secure venue rentals
  • Coordinate insurance riders and venue requirements
  • Create run‑of‑show plans with the Music Director, conductor, and staff
  • Serve as on‑site point person for dress rehearsals and concerts
  • Oversee percussion/equipment transport, storage, stage setup, and venue access
    • Willingness to drive a 16‑ft truck is a plus
  • Coordinate with audio/video engineers
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers (ticket table staff, ushers)
  • Support all logistics that ensure a smooth concert experience

Administrative & Team Collaboration

  • Work with ACO staff to keep concerts within budget
  • Assist with administrative tasks throughout the season
  • Communicate with musicians, volunteers, and venue partners

  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented problem solvers
  • Strong communicators who enjoy working with people
  • Reliable, self‑directed workers who can manage timelines
  • Students or recent graduates interested in arts management, event production, or nonprofit work
  • Musicians or former ensemble members (helpful but not required)

Preferred Background

  • Experience managing or assisting with performing arts events
  • Coursework or degree in Arts Management, Music, or related fields
  • Familiarity with large instrumental ensembles
