The Austin Civic Orchestra employs part-time workers as needed to fulfill duties vital to the organization’s success. The following position is currently open.

Executive Director

The board of the Austin Civic Orchestra (ACO) is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director. This contract role will oversee and maintain the day-to-day business of the ACO.  The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors through the Board President, and will work closely with the Music Director and other contracted staff members to carry out the mission of the orchestra.  The orchestra rehearses once a week from late August to early June and performs about seven concerts per season.

Areas of Responsibility

Concert and Rehearsal Manager

  • Arrange and manage rehearsal venues, attend part of rehearsal as needed
  • Negotiate and execute concert venue rental
  • Provide a plan to the venue manager and serve as the orchestra’s contact for each concert
  • Make arrangements for all equipment needed for a concert
  • Contract sound and recording engineers for each concert
  • Arrange for volunteers to staff ticket table and usher each concert
  • Work with the business manager for ticket sales
  • Work with volunteers and staff on the season program and concert inserts
  • Work with the treasurer to get insurance riders for each space
  • Be present at the concert venue for each concert
  • Other duties as needed for a successful concert


  • Maintain the orchestra membership list with contact information
  • Work with the treasurer to track orchestra membership dues payments
  • Keep the orchestra’s Google group membership up-to-date
  • Send announcements before each rehearsal and communicate with the orchestra membership on upcoming events
  • Work closely with the staff in the contract positions to be sure the orchestra operates as planned and within budget. (Business and PR Manager, Development Director, Equipment Manager, Music Director)
  • Other administrative duties as needed


  • The Executive Director is a contract position with the Austin Civic Orchestra
  • Compensation is $6,500 per year

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing a performing arts group, or familiarity with managing a performing arts event
  • Arts Management education or degree
  • Former or current member of a performing arts organization
  • Experience supervising other staff members
