Operations Manager Job Description

The board of the Austin Civic Orchestra is seeking to fill the position of Operations Manager. This contract role will oversee rehearsal and concert management for the ACO. The Operations Manager will report to the Board of Directors through the Executive Director and the Board President, and will work closely with the Music Director and other contracted staff to carry out the mission of the orchestra. The orchestra rehearses once a week from late August to early June and performs 6-8 concerts per season. The number of hours worked each week varies with more duties (up to 15) when the orchestra has a concert and fewer on the weeks in-between (as low as 1-2 hours).

About the Austin Civic Orchestra

The Austin Civic Orchestra (ACO) is a non-profit civic organization that has been around since 1977. The ACO is devoted to bringing high quality music to the community and providing a musical outlet for professional and non-professional musicians alike. The ACO performs six to eight concerts each season, all of which offer programming to suit a wide variety of musical tastes, from traditional classics to pops and most everything in between. Operations Manager Areas of Responsibility

Concert and Rehearsal Manager

  • Arrange and manage rehearsal venues
  • Negotiate and execute concert venue rental.
  • Work with insurance company to get insurance riders for each space.
  • Work with the Music Director and other staff to provide a run-of-show plan to the venue manager. 
  • Serve as the orchestra’s contact for and during each dress rehearsal and concert; be present at the concert venue for each dress rehearsal and concert
  • Arrange for transportation, storage, and use of equipment; venue access, stage set-up and restoration; and all other goods and services necessary to accommodate the Orchestra’s dress rehearsals and concerts held at the concert venue.
  • Coordinate with the audio/video engineer to be present for each concert
  • Arrange for volunteers to staff ticket table & ushers for each concert
  • Other duties as needed for a successful concert.

Administrative

  • Collaborate with ACO staff to ensure a successful concert within budget.
  • Other administrative duties as needed

Compensation

  • The Operations Manager is a contract position with the Austin Civic Orchestra
  • Compensation is $30 per hour.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Can reliably meet required timelines and fully complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Proven strong communication and people skills
  • Able to collaborate with volunteers, staff, board members, and orchestra members

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing a performing arts group, or familiarity with managing a performing arts event
  • Arts Management education or degree
  • Former or current member of a large performing instrumental ensemble
